Founded in June 1980 as a partnership in the name of José Avelino Aguiar Farinha and Francisco da Paixão Agrela, AFA began its activity at Arco da Calheta with about a dozen workers. On 15 May 1984, it became a limited company with the name Avelino Farinha & Agrela, Lda and a share capital of 1.5 million escudos.


The first step towards the creation of the future AFA Group was taken in 1992 with the constitution of Funchalbetão - Técnicas de Betão e Construções, Lda, which began specialising in the production of concrete and performing civil construction works.

In January 1996 AFA and Funchalbetão moved their offices to the business park, Parque Empresarial da Zona Oeste.
The AFA Group took on a formal nature when the holding company AFA SGPS was created in July 2001.

In January 2004 AFA Madeira adopted a new name, Avelino Farinha & Agrela, SA. At the same time it raised its share capital to 15,000,000 euros.

In February 2005 the current AFA Group established its presence in the archipelago of the Azores through AFA Açores (at that time Construtora do Tâmega (Açores), SA)

The AFA Group consolidated its reputation in the construction sector thanks to its high technical skill and solid financial situation.

Aware of the need to create conditions adequate of self-sustained development, the company strives to continually develop and adopt actions to improve its organisation, in order to meet the increasingly pressing demands of its markets.

 

The AFA Group initiated its process of internationalisation in February 2007 when it was awarded the first contract works in Mauritania. Currently the Group is also present in Angola, Senegal and Brazil.

With its headquarters in Madeira Island, the AFA Group, proud to be Portuguese, is presently working in the is presently working in the above mentioned countries in the sector of public works, infrastructure concessions, real estate, the mass media, tourism, quarrying and most recently, air transport.
