In May 2007, the first contract works were begun for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of 111 km of National Highway nº 1 between Birkelane and Koungheul. This project is Lot 1 of the largest highway contract works presently in progress in Senegal. The work consists of the widening of the existing foundation level to 10.2 m, by using landfill, a sub-base made from the recycling of the existing base, a base in soil cement, and a bituminous surface layer, signage, water and environmental works.
The goal of this project is to improve the means of communication between the port of Dakar and the interior of West Africa (Mali, Burkina-Faso, Togo, Benin, etc.) increasing the competitiveness of this port, and therefore, that of Senegal.
In May 2008 the second contract works was begun for the execution of 4 roadways crossing National Highway 1, totalling125 km. The work consists of the execution of water crossings, earthmoving and a surface layer in natural laterite, 15 cm thick.
The goal of this project is to improve the means of communication with the interior zones around the National Highway 1, in the region of Kaffrine, located in the area of the first contract works.
The works in progress in Senegal involve 22 expatriates, 325 local employees, 75 pieces of heavy equipment and 85 trucks.
